Leadership

“Helping people heal is more than a catchy slogan at Harris Psychiatric Hospital; it represents the thread of patient-focused, compassionate and professional care woven through every facet of daily operations.  Each day I eagerly look forward to coming to work and the privilege of serving on a dedicated team of skilled professionals helping our fellow South Carolinians in the recovery from mental illness.  Be assured that friends or loved ones entrusted to our care are receiving the best psychiatric treatment available in a safe environment.  Harris Hospital is an awesome place to work.  Should you have a passion for those with mental illness and leaving a positive legacy etched in the lives of those within our community, then perhaps Harris Hospital is the place for you.  Our previous hospital CEO, John Fletcher said it best, “Should you need a greater professional challenge in your life; a care-giver in the public mental health system is what you need to be.  Should you desire to “make a difference”, Harris Hospital is where you need to work.”  Thank you for visiting our site.  If you want to visit and further explore potential professional or volunteer opportunities, please give us a call”.  – A. McEniry

After graduation from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Mr. McEniry embarked upon a military career in the army as an infantry officer.  Upon retirement from the army he had a successful profession in higher education administration prior to coming to Harris in 2008.  Mr. McEniry assumed the role of Harris Psychiatric Hospital Director in July 2016 after serving eight years as the Chief Operating Officer at the facility.  His interest in mental health began during his formative years at home when his mother worked as a secretary for 15 years at the Emory Hospital Psychiatric Clinic.  During his tenure at Harris Hospital and after losing his brother prematurely to mental illness, he developed a more profound interest and passion for those with mental illness and in providing the very best of care necessary to achieve recovery and maintain a high quality of life.

The operating philosophy at HPH is that “it starts at the front gate.”  Mr. McEniry believes that every aspect of operations - cleanliness of the grounds and facility, direct patient care, discharge/transition planning to local mental health centers, etc. – must be first class and always focused on the patient’s experience and care.  His emphasis is maintaining a level of concern and consistently providing the quality of care to our patients as if they were our own family.  Mr. McEniry sees continuation of existing public-private collaborative partnerships and development of new ones as a viable means of leveraging inherent strengths for the benefit of patients and shareholders alike.  “I value our relationships with medical and nursing schools, residency programs, social work, activity therapy and psychology internship programs and local hospitals.  It is these dynamic and synergistic partnerships that will enable HPH to achieve our vision of being recognized locally, regionally and nationally as a center of excellence in the treatment of mental illness.”
